At the start of civil war, the bulls were the show par excellence of Spain, still far behind an emerging football began to gain followers, especially in large cities. Bulls and bullfighting in general, raised passions in all strata and sectors of society without distinction: workers, aristocrats, politicians, artists, intellectuals ... surely, the love of the bulls was one of the few things that matched the most English in the summer of 1936.
But the start of the war also presentiría dramatically in the bullfighting world. Even during the short existence of the Second Republic, especially in his later years, the rarefied political atmosphere was felt in the stands with clashes between fans, which sometimes did not go beyond the lines of invective between sun, but sometimes ended with the confrontation between fans, even further, as in the case of rejoneador "Algabeño" to be shot after a run in Malaga in 1935 seriously wounded saving his life miraculously.
The split between the protagonists of the festival would also two distinct groups, first farmers, businessmen and leading figures to be aligned with Franco's side, while the most junior, second row and bullfighters staff working in the field or in the markets, take advantage of the Republic. On one side many suffer uncontrolled violence the first months of the war, including farmers and Teresa Thomas Murube Zayas, or banderilleros Francisco Galadi and Joaquin Arcollas shot with Federico García Lorca, to name just a few of a long list. They would also be many cases of stars of the festival on both sides to take up arms, stands out for its uniqueness Taurinas Militia, formed the first days of the war in Madrid by people the world of bullfighting, bullfighter, bullfighters, Junior ... that would be the embryo of the 96th Mixed Brigade, also known as Brigade Toreros, who would flock to "Litres II", torero de Fuenlabrada, to end the war, taking a leading role in the Teruel front.
would be very large ratio of the bullfighting world people who participated in some form or another in the race, as Manolete, Melchor Rodríguez Marcial Lalanda or the "Red Angel", to name just a few. Also the aftermath of the war would last for a long time in the world of bullfighting, bullfighters would be many who would have to find another occupation, as in the case of Juanita Cruz, the best woman bullfighter of all time, who could not return to bullfight in Spain after the war, because the new rules banning women bullfight. Many herds of wild cattle disappear, some by famine and others by the barbarity, being greatly reduced the cabin, forcing the Bulls deal allowing lower weight that coped before the war. Similarly some places would also be destroyed, including the Madrid Tetuan de las Victorias.
